We LOVE this
as a great book for reading to
children to help them cope with parting with a beloved pet to kennels, when
the family goes on holiday.
If I say so myself, not bad for adults either! This would be a comforting &
humourous book to buy a grown-up who's worried about leaving their dog in kennels
too!
An excellent recommendation to have a few copies of this
in the reception area of your kennels!
Amazon Editorial Review:
Those who know the two earlier Spike books will welcome his new adventure. Spike
must stay at the kennel overnight, and he is worried, lonely, and frightened.
He misses his bed. He hates the food. He howls at night. Then he is invited by
the other dogs to join a nighttime romp and becomes one of the group, until they
are busted and sent back inside. In the morning, when it is time to leave, Spike
wants to stay. Of course, this turn of events will be all too familiar to children.
The cartoonlike watercolor illustrations depict Spike's emotions accurately and
with humor. Children first see the apprehensive pooch being dragged into the kennel
by his determined owner, with assorted canines lounging on the reception desk,
the floor, and the counters. The closing illustration shows the same scene, but
this time with a reluctant Spike being led out. Bright, bold colors capture all
of the activities surrounding this pup's first night away from home.
Ages 3-6. This third adventure featuring lovable pooch Spike is a humorous
tale about his first overnighter at the kennel. The story is cute, but it's Bogan's
expressive cartoon illustrations that steal the show. Spike's apprehension and
sadness are apparent in his body language as he slinks away with the kennel attendant,
ears and tail drooping, eyes pleading. Other pictures are equally expressive,
depicting Spike's dramatic and often comical response to each new experience,
including playing Frisbee with new dog pals. Though Spike is glad to see his owner
the next day, he later dreams about his doggie escapades. This is a great choice
for kids getting ready to spend a night away from home for the first time, or
to reinforce the message that new experiences can be frightening, but they usually
turn out just fine.
